Dulles International Airport Terminal

The easy movement for the passengers in mind, the architecture designed a straightforward layout for the terminal. Dulles International Airport consists of only one terminal located outside of the secure area and it also has 4 concourses.

The terminal is divided into two levels. Departure can be found on the upper level and arrivals are on the lower level. Pedestrian walkways and ride the Aero Train are the best options for the passengers to move between the concourses.
You can find the Ground transportation on the third lower level and outside of the terminal. so, road systems are connected with departures, arrivals, and ground transportation. Car parking is on the outside of the terminal.

After ticketing, the next concern for the passengers is the security checkpoint. the IAD has 2 security checkpoints at the end of the terminal. From the checkpoint, the pedestrian walkway is connected with /B gates, Aero Train stations, Z gates, or the D gates shuttle bus. Hence, passengers do not face any hassle after security checking to move to any other area of the area.

Concourses

The terminal has 5 concourses—A, B, C, D and Z. Once inside the secure area, passengers can access the concourses.

Concourse A

Concourse A is a regional concourse, connected by 31 United Express commuter gates and 12 mainline gates. The gates are almost all accessible on foot by pedestrian bridges. Opened on May 2, 1999, it covers more than 110,000 square feet and serves 36 regional aircraft positions.

On this concourse, passengers will find fast food and sit-down restaurants including the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse, Etihad First and Business Class Lounges, various reputable shops, Etihad First and Business Class Lounges, Dunkin’ with Chapel and The Kitchen by Wolfgang Puck.

Concourse B

Opened on February 1, 1998, this concourse was smaller than other concourses and expanded in 2003 with 540,000 square feet and 27 gates. Concourse B is connected with 28 gates numbered B37 to B38, B40 to B45, B47 to B51, B62 to B67, B70 to B76, B78 to B79, and B81. Here, you can find good options of shops, reputed food and dining options such as Turkish Airlines Lounge, British Airways Galleries Lounge, and Lufthansa Lounge are all based in Concourse B, and there are food and dining options, pizza, and Five Guys.

Concourse C

Sits at 550,000 square feet, this Concourse consists of 23 gates numbered C1 to C9, C11 to C12, C14, C17 to C20, C22 to C24, and C26 to C28. It has several lounges for passengers such as 3 United Club lounges, and a United Polaris Lounge. You cannot be bored while you are on the Concourse with shopping and dining options, including Starbucks and Brook Stone.

Concourse D

Concourse D- connected by 27 gates numbered D1 to D8, D10 to D12, D14 to D16, D18 to D21, D23 to D27, D29 to D30 and D32. There is also a lounge such as the United Club Lounge. You’ll also find 2 Dunkin’, a Pizza Hut, and a Starbucks location here.

Concourse Z

There are 4 gates you can find on Concourse Z numbered Z6, Z7, Z9, and Z10. Very close to the main terminal, this concourse consists of baggage claim. It also has a good selection of food options with Subway and a Dunkin’, but that’s about it!

Global Entry

Dulles International Airport IAD or IAD also offers Global Entry kiosks to their passengers if they are enlisted in the program named Global Entry. They have to arrange an interview in the Enrollment Center, located at the west end of the main terminal on the arrivals level, which is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

TSA Pre Check

IAD airport consists of a TSA PreCheck Enrollment Center found in the terminal building near the east security checkpoint (outside of the secure area). This center is open 5 days a week Monday to Friday: 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Inter-terminal Transfers of the airport.

Aerotrain

The most convenient option for Inter-terminal in Dulles International Airport is Aerotrain. It is actually an automated train system, that runs between the terminals, concourses, parking etc. This quick ride usually takes a maximum of two minutes to cover the 2 stations. Aerotrain can be your best moving option if you have a flight from gate number A, B, or C.

People movers

Dulles’ most popular inter-terminal transfer options are “mobile lounges” or “people movers”. It is actually a passenger waiting room, which moves like a bus from one terminal to another.

You can use this people mover if you:

  • Flights depart from Gate D (one of United’s concourses).
  • United is from Gate D and Terminal A.
  • You can also use it to go to the customs area in the main terminal.

Ground Transportation Options

1. Passenger walkway

If you want to be a few steps ahead of your flight destination, you can use the 1,000-foot underground pedestrian walkway, connecting the main terminal to Concourse B. On both sides of this walkway, you will find moving sidewalks.

2. Bus

Fairfax Connector: To and from IAD you will find local bus services which ply route numbers 952 and 983. Of these, route number 952 serves destinations in Reston. Route 983 runs between the Smithsonian’s Woodver-Hazy Air and Space Museum. The second curb outside the airport baggage claim is the stop for these buses.

Virginia Breeze: These buses run from Curb 2A to Intercity Shenandoah Valley, Blacksburg, and Union Station in Washington.

Mega bus: These buses run from the airport curb 2A to Union Station to Charlottesville.

3. Metrorail

Passengers now mostly take the Silver Line metro to get directly from the airport to downtown Washington, DC. The metro station is located very close to Terminal Parking Garage 1 (North), approximately a 5-minute walk, with fares ranging from $2 to $6 for 1 hour.

4. Ridesharing

Lyft, Uber, and ALTO operate ride-sharing services from IAD. It picks up and drops passengers curbside outside the terminal.

5. Parking

Dulles International Airport has public parking available for more than 24,000 vehicles. In front of the terminal building, you will find three parking lots namely Valet, Hourly, and Daily. There are also two more garages or economy parking lots you can choose from to save on costs. Payments are accepted in the following forms Cash, American Express, MasterCard, and Visa. Parking fees are $12 per day. Valet Parking is available for $35 for day 1 and $10 per hour up to a $35 maximum. You can use the Parking garages. There are 2 parking garages available near the terminal parking lot which charges hourly: $6 and Daily rate: $19.
