Established in 1925 under the name Charlotte Municipal Airport, Charlotte Douglas International Airport or CLT is the civil-military airport that serves the greater Charlotte metropolitan area. Welcomes more than 46 million passengers every year, the airport acts as a major gateway to the Caribbean Islands and serves 175 nonstop destinations worldwide. It is the second largest hub for American Airlines the first hub is Dallas/Fort Worth. It got its current name in 1982. The airport has a joint civilian-military facility, Charlotte Air National Guard Base, and its host unit, the 145th Airlift Wing (145 AW) of the North Carolina Air National Guard. The guard is located in a military cantonment area on the eastern side of the airport.

Passenger Terminals at Charlotte Douglas International Airport
Sometimes Travelers become confused about which terminal they will catch US Airlines flights. With proper knowledge about the terminal, you do not need to ask anyone where to catch your desired flight. Charlotte Douglas International Airport has 1 terminal and five concourses designated as A, B, C, D, and E. There are 115 gates on these five concourses. The layout of the terminal, gates, and concourse is very simple, and passengers can easily find it. Taxi stands, shuttle stands, and bus stands can be found near almost every gate, which makes your travel easy and convenient.
Terminals
The main terminal is situated central portion of the airport and it consists of 3 levels. The airport has one main terminal and five concourses, designated as A, B, C, D, and E concourses.
Terminal A
Connected to 22 gates, Concourse A is used by Air Canada, American, Contour Airlines, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, and United Airlines. The first phase of adding 18 additional gates was completed in 2018 and construction of the second phase began in 2020. The Concourse features a digital artwork titled “Interconnected” by Refik Anadol that is prominently displayed on three massive 139-foot (42 m)-tall display screens. The artwork draws from the airport’s data network of aircraft movements and turns the data into an ever-changing visual artwork.
Terminal B
Located southwest area of the airport, this Concourse is connected by 16 gates that are used almost exclusively by American Airlines. The concourse also features an American Airlines Admirals Lounge and a range of shops and restaurants. Security checkpoints A and B are situated near to the closest to Concourse B.
Terminal C
Located in the southeast area of the airport, Concourse C is connected by 14 gates numbered C2 to C11, C13 to C15, and C19. Among them, 8 gates are used only by American Airlines. Besides these, other gates are used by American Eagle flights, operated by Republic Airline. Just outside of the concourse, you can find the large American Airlines Admirals Club, situated between gate numbers D and E. The closest security checkpoint of this Concourse is checkpoint C. Concourse C is the house of several shops and restaurants. To reach the D and E gates, you can take a right out of Concourse C, or to reach the gate number A and B, you should take a left.
Terminal D
Located on the east side of the airport, Concourse D is the main concourse for international flights. It is connected with 8 gates numbered D1, D3-D6, D8, D10, D13. D and E are the closest security checkpoints concourse found on the east side of the terminal. Besides the International Airport, American Airlines also operates some domestic flights from this concourse. Lufthansa and Volaris also use this concourse.
To reach Concourse E, you will find the walkway running to the right from Concourse D. To reach the other concourse, you must continue straight along this walkway. You can find several shops and restaurants, American Express Centurion Lounge in Concourse D.
Terminal E
This Concourse is used for American Eagle flights, Concourse E is connected with 33 gates numbered E1 to E13, E18, E20 to E31, E36 to E38, E40, E41, E43, and E45 and is situated on the east side of the airport. American Eagle Airlines operates over 340 flights per day from this concourse.
To access Concourse E, passengers must take the escalator or elevator to level 1 from the connector. To reach Concourse D, take a left from Concourse E, or take a right to reach other concourses and walk along the connector.

Global Entry
For Global entry, you need to ensure that you select a date and time that is suitable for availability. Then proceed to the CLT Enrollment Center to finalize their application. On the day of your confirmed interview, arrive at the CLT Enrollment Center, conveniently located in the baggage claim area of is open Monday to Friday, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
TSA Pre Check
At CLT you will find 2 dedicated TSA Pre Checks — 1 at Checkpoint B and the other at Checkpoint D. If you are approved following the application process, you can use these lanes for faster security clearance. At the airport, the TSA Pre-Check enrollment center is located in the concourse after security. Applicants can contact us here for an enrollment interview. Once the application is approved, you will receive your Known Traveler Number, which you can use to access the TSA Pre-Check lane at any US airport.
Inter-Terminal Transfers
Charlotte Douglas is a fully connected airport with all concourses accessible from the main terminal. In addition, its five concourses are connected by overhead walkways, and some are connected by trains.

How to get to Charlotte Airport
1. By Road
The airport terminal is located on Josh Birmingham Parkway which connects with Wilkinson Boulevard (to I-485 and Uptown Charlotte), Little Rock Road (to I-85), and Billy Graham Parkway (to I-77).
2. By Public Transport
You’ll find two regular bus routes from the airport terminal, Route 5-Airport (Spinner) to Uptown Charlotte/CTC and Route 60-Tyvola Road to LYNX Tyvola Station, operated by the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS). You can also find some bus service between the old terminal and uptown Charlotte/CTC via Route 10-West Boulevard.
3. By Rental Car
At the very front of the airport terminal, you will find rental car facilities, which operate on the three lower levels of Hourly Deck. The Level 2 lobby includes rental car company counters and kiosks. These companies are Advantage, Avis, Alamo, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, Enterprise and National.
4. Economy Parking
You can book your official CLT Airport Parking online or on the app to ensure your car’s parking availability. Even during the busiest times of the day, parking will be available to all travelers who book ahead of time online. When a parking facility shows “Booked” or “Reservation Only” it means that all drive-up spaces in that facility are currently full, but only those who booked parking online will be able to gain access.
